Volvo Ocean Race

The Volvo Ocean Race returns to Lisbon from May 25th to June 7th, and this time the organization expects to welcome about 500 thousand visitors.

Lisbon is the only European capital to receive the greatest boat race competition around the world.

The Doca de Pedrouços in Algés is the place where everything will happen and this year, the event will occupy an area of around 57.000m2, where you can contact directly with the teams and boats, attend concerts or visit the different exhibitions, fairs and activities, all with the sea as theme.

The competition is all related to Portugal. It starts in the Mediterranean, passes the Bojador and the Cape of Good Hope, continues by the Indian Ocean, the Strait of Malacca to China, the Pacific, the Strait of Magellan, goes to Brazil, passes Newport, Boston and returns to Lisbon, which is almost a homecoming.

This maritime route is in fact the history of the Portuguese and the history of the Discoveries.

The Volvo Ocean Race started already on October 11th 2014 in Alicante and it ends on June 27th in Switzerland. Seven teams travel 38,739 nautical miles around the world, surpassing nine stages and going through 10 different ports: Alicante (Spain), Cape Town (South Africa), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Sanya (China), Auckland (New Zealand), Itajaí (Brazil), Newport (Rhode Island, USA), Lisbon (Portugal), Lorient ( France) and The Hague (Netherlands).
