Lisbon's Christmas lights
Lisbon is renowned for its magical Christmas lights, which transform the city into a festive wonderland during the holiday season. The main highlights include:
1. Baixa and Avenida da Liberdade
The heart of Lisbon, especially Rua Augusta, is adorned with elegant and vibrant light displays. Praça do Comércio features a grand Christmas tree with thousands of sparkling LED lights. Avenida da Liberdade, the city’s most iconic boulevard, glows with intricate designs strung across the trees and streetlights.
2. Rossio Square (Praça Dom Pedro IV)
Known for its fountains and traditional Portuguese pavements, the square lights up with themed decorations, often accompanied by illuminated Christmas markets and live entertainment.
3. Belém and Monuments
Areas like Belém and the surrounding historic landmarks (such as the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower) are also lit, often reflecting the city's maritime heritage in their designs.
4. Parque Eduardo VIIThe park hosts the "Wonderland Lisboa" fair, which includes a giant Ferris wheel, an ice-skating rink, and light tunnels, creating a perfect family outing spot.
5. Neighborhood Decorations
Local neighborhoods such as Alfama, Chiado, and Bairro Alto boast their own unique and traditional light displays, adding a cozy charm.
Lisbon's eco-friendly approach means many displays use energy-efficient LED lighting, keeping the sparkle sustainable. The lights are typically switched on in late November and remain until early January, enhancing the city's festive spirit.
